FEATURED PROJECT

MOBILIZING, CAPACITY BUILDING OF AFRICAN FAITH-BASED INSTITUTIONS IN COUNTERING, RESPONDING TO, PREVENTING VIOLENT EXTREMISM (PVE) IN AFRICA

The objectives of this project include mobilizing religious leaders in Africa, vetting them to develop a roster, supporting the operationalization of the roster in a pilot training based on a training toolkit developed by UNDP with the assistance of IIPC. Two regional summits were organized under this project. The outcomes of these regional conferences include:

  1. Having a better understanding of the leading role of religious leaders in facilitating and catalyzing the plans of youth development and PVE.
  2. Adoption of the religious edict (Declaration) articulating the position of religious leaders about the ideology used by extremist groups, which was issued the Abuja West African regional conference in October.
  3. Identification of the role of other stakeholders in combating and preventing VE.
  4. Identification of ways to establish region-wide networks of mosques, madrassas, and religious organizations for PVE.

Abuja Regional Summit of “Muslim Religious Leaders and Scholars on Countering, Responding and Preventing Violent Extremism in Africa”, October 17-18, 2016, Abuja, Nigeria, the participant issue and sign Abuja Declaration on Countering and Preventing Violent Extremism in Africa. While in Kampala Regional Summit of “Muslim Religious Leaders and Scholars on Countering, Responding and Preventing Violent Extremism in Africa” May 15-16, 2017, Kampala, Uganda, the participant issue and sign “Kampala Regional Summit Statement: Affirmation of Abuja Declaration on Countering and Preventing Violent Extremism”, in addition to action plan to implement the declaration.
